Small Biz: Mom enters consignment world
As a wife and mother of four young girls ages 11 to 2, Oconee County native Chastity Shepherd considers herself an expert in children's clothing.

Shepherd's experience in buying kid's apparel for her own brood and a desire to embark on an entrepreneurial career prompted her to open Butterfly Kisses, a retail consignment shop that sells children's wear, other kid's products and maternity wear. Butterfly Kisses, which Shepherd calls a "kids' and moms' resale boutique," opened March 1 on West Broad Street in the small commercial center where McAlister's Deli and Ruffalo Cody are located.
"I decided to go out on an adventure," Shepherd said. "I love children's clothing, and I feel like a connoisseur - I know good quality."
Shepherd's resale business carries a range of clothing sizes - from baby clothes to teen wear.
"I want to be able to still get good quality clothing even for teenagers," Shepherd said. "A lot of parents whom I talk to want their children to still be dressing like kids."
She also will offer more than children's clothing.
"I will buy or consign anything that pertains to children - shoes, cribs, toys, clothing, books car seats, strollers, bassinets, blankets. Anything a child will use, I can resell," she said.
The shop will include a few brand-new, little-girl items, such as handmade tutus and hair bows that someone is making for Shepherd and selling to her at a discount.
Butterfly Kisses also is carrying some maternity wear, prompted by her own experiences. Following her pregnancies, Shepherd could not find an option for reselling them.
"When I had maternity clothes, there was nowhere to take them unless you wanted to give them away," she said.
Shepherd tries to keep all her apparel seasonal and current, style-wise, and she is looking for high-quality items. She considers brand names, but variety is more important than labels, she said.
